藏語「擦擦」一詞，意為複製，源自梵文讀音的藏文轉寫，起源於印度佛教的模製泥塑。在西藏稱之為“擦擦”，即指泥製的各種小泥塑、小佛塔等，經由模具擠壓脱模後曬乾，有的則會燒製或彩繪。

擦擦多用於佛像及佛塔的裝臟，有些則直接置於寺廟，閉關修習的岩窟或擦康內，還有的堆放在山頂和路口的瑪尼堆處，與風馬旗、瑪尼石刻和經幡在一起，受到信眾的膜拜。除上述的供奉方式外，也可將擦擦安放於隨身佩帶的嘎烏之內，以便隨時隨地觀想禮拜。
